The design and patterns of this type of runner are taken from Saddle bags that traditionally feature strong geometric designs themselves, as well as occasionally straight lines and blocks of colour/design. These ‘Khorjeen’ type rugs are woven by Turkmen and Hazara tribespeople in the central and Northern provinces of Afghanistan. (The word ‘Khorjeen’ means ‘saddle bag’ in Farsi, the official language of modern-day Iran, parts of Afghanistan as well as Tajikistan). Khorjeen rugs are unique, much like a finger print, with each rug having similar characteristics, but a unique pattern. The wool yarns used are hand spun and dyed using natural dyes such as cochineal and indigo, typically incorporating deep, warm colours which add to their dramatic and vibrant appearance. Once dyed the different colour wools are hand woven on to a cotton warp. Local Ghazni wool is used as this is durable, hard wearing and takes on natural dyes very well. The wools are dyed using natural dyes (plants, root, flowers, bark, fruit skins etc.) and then hand spun, prior to knotting. Actual examples of dye matter include plants such as walnut, pomegranate, root plants and saffron. Once woven the runners are then transported to Pakistan where they are expertly finished, including washing and trimming, before being exported all over the world.
100% new wool pile hand knotted on a cotton foundation. This exceptional runner measures 6 feet 7 inches long by 2 feet 6 inches wide. ( 2.01 x 0.76 metres ).
